Rome
Your first class
Everything you might be wondering before you come, answered plainly.
- Do I need any experience?
- No. Most people who walk in have never practised Ashtanga Yoga. You are taught the first postures one at a time, and the sequence grows from there.
- Do I need to be flexible?
- No — that is what the practice is for. Nobody in the room started able to do what they can do now, and nobody is looking at you.
- What should I bring?
- Clothes you can move and sweat in, and a towel. A mat if you have one; the school can lend you one if you don't.
- Should I eat before?
- Practise on an empty stomach — nothing solid for two or three hours beforehand. It is a physical practice, and it is much easier this way.
- How long does it take?
- In the beginning, half an hour or so. As you are given more postures the practice lengthens, over months and years, to an hour and a half.
- How often should I come?
- The method is built on daily practice, traditionally six days a week with a rest on Saturdays and on the full and new moon. Start with what you can genuinely sustain — three mornings a week that you actually keep is worth more than six you abandon.
- Do I need to book?
- Let the school know you are coming, so someone is expecting you and can take a few minutes with you before the room fills.
